State DEP Reports On Status Of Promenade Construction

EDGEWATER - The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued a letter to the Mayor and Council in response to residents’ concerns about the ongoing development of The Promenade mixed-use project.

In the letter to the Borough dated August 8, 2002, Evan van Hook, Assistant Commissioner of the DEP’s Site Remediation Program, stated that the Department was working closely with the developer, Edgewater Enterprises, LLC, in “making sure that construction progresses only in areas where the Department is satisfied that sufficient contaminant delineation and remediation has taken place.”

The letter from the DEP came subsequent to a public availability session held on July 25 by the State Department of Health and Senior Services, at which a number of Edgewater residents had expressed concerns about the former Celotex industrial park.

Stating that “numerous remedial activities and environmental investigations are ongoing” and that “safeguards have been put in place for the construction workers on the job and residents in the immediate area”, the Department concluded that it “is confident that the completed remediation will be protective of the public health and the environment”.
