EDGEWATER - Democratic Councilwomen Mary Hogan and Neda Rose have prevailed in their joint bid for a third term on the Edgewater Borough Council, holding off a challenge by sole Republican candidate Will Corrente.
As of 8:40 p.m. Tuesday night, Democrats Hogan and Rose were the projected winners with totals of 1448 and 1383 respectively, with Republican Corrente garnering only 1216 votes. Some 132 absentee ballots will not be counted until approximately 10:00 p.m. tonight.
Hogan, whose family has a long history of Democratic Party politics, and Rose, a founder of the Edgewater Arts Council, began their long road to reelection in June, when they found themselves in a contested Democratic primary without the support of the Democratic Municipal Committee. Handily defeating primary contenders John Oates and Mark Klein, who occupied the Democratic party organization column, Hogan and Rose then found their Republican opposition in the general election to consist of a single candidate in Will Corrente, who needed a split ticket in order to gain a Republican foothold on the Borough Council.
With the reelection of the incumbent Democrats, the political makeup of the Council remains static, with five Democrats and one Independent, Councilwoman Valory Bardinas.
