Old Edgewater: Church of the Mediator, 1912
The following information and photo are courtesy Caroline Harkness of Sparks, Nevada
I am attaching a picture that my mother had of her mother and 6 others taken in 1912 at the Church of the Mediator, Edgewater, New Jersey. It must have been as part of a play. The names of most are listed below:
- Carolyn Haslem (my grandmother, age 21) playing Mary Todd Lincoln
- Gertrude Higham as Florence Nightingale
- Tillie Schubauer
- Emma Brandt
- Madge Marshall as Betsy Ross
- Emma House as Pocahontas
- Leo ________ as Hiawatha
A lot of people are into family trees these days, which lead to a lot of historical research and interesting local histories. It is possible some of the Beacon's readers are descendants of those listed above.
My grandmother Carolyn Haslem was born January 22, 1891 in Brooklyn. She attended Northfield Seminary in Edgewater. She had a sister Maud Haslem that died of diphtheria as a teen when she attended Northfield Seminary and a brother Edward that died before the age of 40 in New York City. Her father George Haslem was a Superintendant of the Lever Brothers Plant in the Shadyside section of Edgewater.
I am seeking to find more information about my great grandfather and his family. If any of the Beacon's readers want to contact me, you may e-mail me at woodfishnv@aol.com.
