Martin Deegan Exhibition at Polo Gallery Through May 6
The Polo Gallery is currently presenting new works by a number of artists, including Martin Deegan. Formerly from our area (his parents still live in Edgewater), Mr. Deegan now resides in San Francisco.
The exhibition runs until May 6. In the artists own words:
I am a painter. I term my work as such. My works have been referred to as post-modern impressionism, modern expressionism, and even surrealism. I like to view them as detailed journal entries. Or just paintings that were once inside, but now are outside.
The work that may be seen at the Polo Gallery is a series of personal and intimate paintings that were created during my senior year at School of Visual Arts and shortly after. They are quite large, with a strong concentration on texture. All the mediums, from wax to silk-screen, were made from scratch. All the colors are made from raw pigment. All images are my own and the only images ever printed. Everything down to the stretchers are made by my own design.
These specific paintings were made during an intense time period of my artistic growth, and it shows.
I am currently in San Francisco and am developing a new body of work that has an entirely new direction. This will be the final piece of my New York artist work. I will be sad but relieved to see it go.
